Sprinter Van vs Minivan: Cost Per Person for Group Trips
When a group of 8 or more is planning a trip, the first instinct is often to rent minivans. But comparing a Sprinter van vs minivan on the daily rate alone misses the point. What matters is the cost per person, plus everything that comes with running more than one vehicle. Here’s how to work it out for your own trip.
Step 1: count the vehicles you actually need
A minivan seats 7 or 8 at most, and fewer once luggage is involved. A group of 12 needs two minivans; a group of 15 needs two or three. A 15 passenger Sprinter or Ford Transit carries the whole group in one vehicle.
| Group size | Minivans needed | Passenger vans needed |
|---|---|---|
| 8 | 1–2 | 1 (12 passenger) |
| 12 | 2 | 1 (12 or 15 passenger) |
| 15 | 2–3 | 1 (15 passenger) |
Step 2: work out the cost per person
Use this simple formula for each option:
Cost per person = (daily rate × number of vehicles × days + fuel + parking + tolls) ÷ number of travellers
For example, if a 15 passenger van costs $X a day and a minivan costs $Y a day, a group of 15 compares $X against 2 × $Y or 3 × $Y. Once you need two minivans, the single van is usually the cheaper option per person, and the gap widens on multi-day trips. Step 3: add the costs that multiply
- Fuel: two or three vehicles burn more fuel in total than one van carrying everyone.
- Parking: hotels, stadiums and event venues often charge per vehicle.
- Tolls: Houston’s toll roads charge per vehicle too.
- Drivers: every extra minivan needs another qualified driver who can’t relax on the trip.
Step 4: weigh what a minivan can’t do
- Everyone together. One van means one arrival time, no convoys and no lost cars.
- Room to move. High-roof Sprinters let most adults stand up inside, and most of our vans have a smart TV with a Blu-ray/DVD player.
- Space for gear. More than 494 cubic feet in each Sprinter, with luggage carriers and bike racks available as add-ons.
When a minivan still makes sense
If you have 7 or fewer people, need to park in a low-clearance garage, or are only making a short trip around town, a minivan can be the simpler choice. High-roof vans don’t fit many parking garages, so check clearance at your hotel or venue first.
